CUP WITH THESEUS AND THE BULL


Name: Cup with Theseus and the bull.

Name of the artist: Oltos painter.

Material and techniques: Pottery. Techniques of red figures. This decorative technique started around 530 b.C. and it replaced the technique of black figures. The scenes were drawn in red or were engraved upon fresh clay, over black background. This technique lasted until the III century.


Where it was made and found: It was made in Atica, we don´t know where it was found.

When it was made and found: It was made around 510 b.C., it´s unknown when it was found.

Dimensions: Height 14 cm, width 32 cm.

Thematic: Theseus, a civillising hero and an example of the Athenian ephebes, appears running behind a bull, as a nacked adolescent, wearing a myrtle wreath. Theseus, the mythical king of Athens, avercame the monster and offered it up as a sacrifice on the Acropolis of Athens. Theseus won to the bull in the labyrinth thanks to the thread ball of yarn that Adriadna had given to him, who was in love with him. This history is told in the seventh work of Hercules.
